Monica Dengo (b.1966) was born in Camposampiero, Italy. Working as an artist and calligrapher, she explores the expressive potential of the sign and of handwriting. Her major exhibitions include "East-West Calligraphy" and "La via della scrittura" at the Museo Correr in Venice, "The Heart We Share" at CasermArcheologica in Sansepolcro, and shows in Japan, France, and the United States. In 2014 she received the Best International Artist Award at the Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial. Her work is held in public and private collections including the San Francisco Public Library and the Akademie der Künste in Berlin. For Monica Dengo, the sign is always writing, and the act of making signs is a language that connects us all. From this perspective, even illegible writing becomes expression and communication: every sign is an embodied gesture, carrying the memory of a hand, of pressure, and of direction. Her artistic practice stems from a conviction that has shaped her work from the very beginning: writing is not merely a means of communication, but a place where relationships take form. A relationship with memory, since the ductus, even before it becomes a letter, already carries within it the history of the alphabet. A relationship with the body, through the constant effort to make visible how every sign is an embodied gesture, both a medium and a movement of thought. A relationship with the collective, when writing is understood as an act of sharing, never a solitary act. In more recent years, this network of relationships has expanded to embrace the natural environment, which has itself become both an interlocutor and a matrix for Dengo’s work. Only after deeply exploring the limits and possibilities of the Latin alphabet did Monica begin to view writing through the lens of other cultures, discovering that form is already philosophy and that the line is already thought. Observing the signs of Latin script from other perspectives meant, in fact, questioning what we have come to regard as natural. To embrace other ways of forming signs, Monica Dengo had to “step aside”: to leave the comfort zone of established, legible forms, laden with certainties. From this step, her personal form of abstraction emerges, not a departure from the real, but a more attentive listening to it. The exhibition at Artsight invites us to rediscover writing not as a code to be deciphered, but as a shared experience to inhabit.
Welcome to the vernissage in the presence of the artist, 5 september, 12:00-18:00.
