Anna Pekkala

 18 april 2025

Verken utforskar människans försök att efterlikna och bevara en försvinnande naturvärld – att bygga konstgjorda rev, att arkivera en skönhet vi misslyckats med att skydda.

Vernissage (Opening) Söndag 4.5. Kl 13 - 15.

“It’s quiet. I don’t understand how You grew everything so beautifully. You saw that we tried, but it was never the same. And I'm telling You — we really tried.” “That was the last one. Let’s go.”

The body of work explores humanity’s attempt to imitate and preserve a disappearing natural world, to build artificial reefs, to archive a beauty we failed to protect. The fleshy, organic silicone sculptures address power, silencing, and recurring patterns of behavior. Severed mermaid tongues symbolize the muting of both mythical and natural voices. Clinical, synthetic coral reefs are placed on display in natural history museums, once benzene has washed the seas clean. Though we tried, we never made it as beautiful.

Thank you for supporting the exhibition Riksförbundet Sveriges Konstföreningar, Niilo Helander Foundation and Frame Anna Pekkala (b. 1989, Mänttä) is a sculptor based in Helsinki.

She holds a master’s degree in sculpture from the Academy of Fine Arts in Finland. Her work has been widely exhibited across the country. In her practice, emotion, empathy, and brutality meet the aesthetics of hardware stores, mass extinctions, and references to popular culture. Mortality and fluids are recurring themes. She works with a wide range of materials and across varying scales. Pekkala is a fearful water creature who, through her art, explores the tensions, movements, and destruction that lie beneath the surface.

The exhibition at Galleri Apoteket is her first solo show outside of Finland.
